I dug these two years ago, and just now found them, the ring is my best find so far, it was found in a "island" of woods next to a known union stopping point, they only stayed there a couple weeks.

Probably repairing and shodding. I was told the ring is horse furniture made by the traveling blacksmith that was attached to the regiment.

I never considered that fact noone ever talks about the blacksmiths, helpers etc.

you can see the lump where it was beaten together, this metal is very hard and black, good stuff.

not sure of the shell period, if you know post it up.Smile

Oh man!  You got you a 12th Georgia button!

Just kidding, that's what we call those 12 Gauge shotgun shells.  Not really worth anything but you have to dig them if you want to find buttons and even bullets in some cases.

Because they are brass and about the same size as buttons, they sound exactly like them.

The iron ring is old looking.  Not sure what it may have went to(horse saddles, artillery, etc had a ton of iron pieces..)  I'll check my books and see if I recognize anything...
